What I'd Put On My Baby Registry If I Could Do It All Over Again

My original registry had 147 items on it. I actually used maybe 30 of them. Here's the short list that matters.

When I was pregnant, I spent hours researching every single item on my registry. I had a color-coded spreadsheet. I consulted 14 different "must-have" lists. I was convinced I needed the wipe warmer. (I did not need the wipe warmer. It dried out the wipes and took up valuable counter space.)

Now, 18 months and one baby later, here's the registry I'd build if I were starting from scratch. No fluff. No "cute but useless." Just the stuff we actually used until it wore out.

The Non-Negotiables

Ubbi Steel Diaper Pail ($69): Takes regular kitchen trash bags instead of expensive proprietary refills. Made of steel so it doesn't absorb odor like plastic pails do. Ours is 18 months old and still doesn't smell when it's empty.

Spectra S1 Plus Pump ($216): Even if you're planning to exclusively breastfeed, get this pump through insurance. It's hospital-grade, portable (rechargeable battery!), and closed system so you can safely resell it. The Haakaa silicone pump ($13) catches letdown on the other side while you pump — I collected over 200 ounces of milk in 3 months just from the Haakaa alone.

Halo SleepSack Swaddle ($27): The hospital recommended this and they were right. The velcro wings keep baby snug, the bottom-up zipper means you can change diapers without fully unswaddling, and the arms-out transition when it's time to stop swaddling is seamless.

The Splurges That Were Actually Worth It

The Keekaroo Peanut Changer ($129) looks like a piece of medical equipment and costs as much as one, but hear me out: it's a single piece of impermeable foam. No fabric. No laundry. Blowout at 3 AM? Wipe it down and you're done. We've used it for every single diaper change for 18 months. It still looks new. The $30 fabric changing pad we bought for grandma's house developed a mysterious stain within 2 weeks.

The BabyBjörn Bouncer ($209) was our most-used item for months 0-6. It's the only place she'd happily sit while I showered or made coffee. It folds completely flat for storage. The fabric comes off and goes in the wash. We're keeping it for baby #2.

Lovevery Play Gym ($140): The developmental guide alone was worth $30 to me as a clueless first-time mom. We used this from week 2 through month 9. The wooden frame doesn't scream "baby gear" in your living room.
