10 Newborn Essentials I Actually Used (And 5 I Regret Buying)

Two babies, one giant cart full of regrets, and the ten things that actually earned a permanent spot in our house.

With my first baby, I treated newborn shopping like a competitive sport. By the time Clara was four weeks old, I owned a wipe warmer, a bottle warmer, a sterilizer, three different swaddles "just in case," and a stack of gadgets I couldn't even name the purpose of. I remember sitting on the nursery floor at 2 a.m., crying because the bottle warmer — the one a blog swore I absolutely needed — wouldn't heat fast enough. My breastfed baby never touched that bottle warmer. Not once.

By the time our second came along, we'd moved to a smaller place and I got ruthless. Every purchase had to earn its shelf space. Spoiler: almost none of it did. Here are the ten things that actually survived two kids, and the five I'd give away for free if I could.

The Essentials That Earned Their Spot

Halo SleepSack ($27) — Our pediatrician said no blankets before one year, and this was the only swaddle that survived week one. It zips from the bottom, so 2 a.m. diaper changes don't mean unswaddling a screaming baby. I own three sizes now.

WaterWipes ($25 for a 12-pack) — Clara's skin was sensitive from day one, and these are 99.9% water. They're the only wipes that never turned her little bum red. Pricey, for sure, but worth it for the early months.

Haakaa Manual Pump ($13) — The $13 pump that outperformed my electric one. Suction it onto the other side while you nurse and it catches the letdown. I had a full freezer stash by the time I went back to work — without a single dedicated pumping session.

Ubbi Diaper Pail ($69) — I didn't want to be a person with opinions about diaper pails, and yet here we are. It takes regular trash bags, seals the smell in, and has survived two kids without getting gross.

Graco Pack 'n Play ($99) — Bassinet, changing table, and playpen in one, and it folds flat for grandma's house. Our son slept in ours for the first three months.

Gerber Cloth Diapers (10-pack, $15) — The ultimate burp cloths. They get softer with every wash, survive anything, and you cannot have too many. We used ours daily for 18 months straight.

The 5 I Regret Buying

The wipe warmer (my kids screamed no matter the temperature), the bottle warmer (never used), the sanitizer (I hand-washed everything anyway), the fancy bassinet (both babies preferred the Pack 'n Play), and a closet full of ruffly outfits (they lived in onesies). Learn from me.
